BUGLE ‘N BRIEF
March - April 2024 25th Edition
FROM THE PASTOR’S PEN
Members and Friends of Wesley Chapel, grace to you and peace! Here we are, barely at the end of
February, and it already feels like we are well into spring. It puts me in mind of the poem “Spring” by
Christina Rossetti, one section of which reads …
There is no time like Spring,
When life’s alive in everything,
Before new nestlings sing,
Before cleft swallows speed their journey back
Along the trackless track,
God guides their wing,
He spreads their table that they nothing lack,
Before the daisy grows a common flower,
Before the sun has power
To scorch the world up in his noontide hour.
The days lengthen throughout the season of Lent (lengthen and lent are related words).
Soon the calendar will catch up, with the first official day of Spring coming just 10 days before Easter.
During Lent, our Thursday study group is continuing to work with the Ten Commandments, guided in
part by Adam Hamilton’s book and video. Though we are halfway through, you are very welcome to join us.
Each session can stand alone, and the participants are engaged and enthusiastic about it.
During Holy Week, we will have a Good Friday service at 7:00 pm, and will regather for worship on Easter
Morning at our usual time of 9:30 am. Once again, I am soliciting your thoughts. What are your hopes for
our church? What would you like to seeus try to do that we have not yet tried, or have not tried in some time?
How can we better connect with those around us, so that we may become more effective in delivering grace
in our community? I would really like to hear your thoughts.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him,
so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Rom 15)

UPCOMING EVENTS
BIBLE STUDIES
During March and April, we are still examining "The Desire of Ages" and will continue this study through
the season of Lent on Mondays from 10:00-12:00 at Dinah Benson’s home.
Join the Adult Bible Study for something new and challenging as we examine Adam Hamilton’s
book, “Word of Life,” a perspective on the Ten Commandments. This group meets Thursday
mornings from 10:00-12:00, at Dinah Benson's home. Come for good discussion and sweet
fellowship!
ROAD TRIP!
"DANIEL" is coming to Sight and Sound, Lancaster, PA this year. Wesley Chapel is planning to go
Tuesday, July 9 to the 3 pm show. We will carpool, stopping for food on the way home. If you would
like to go, please let Judy Pontius know by the March 15 deadline. Tickets will be purchased at that time.
FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
March 3, Sunday evening at 5:00 pm, we will gather at Dinah Benson's home for a light dinner with dessert
prior to viewing the movie, "One Night with the King" around 6:30pm. This drama recounts the tale of a
Jewish orphan who feels the touch of destiny when she becomes the biblical Esther, Queen of Persia.
April 13, at 11:30. A ladies' luncheon is planned at B.J.'s Restaurant in Frederick. B.J.'s is in the parking lot
adjacent to JC Penney's in Francis Scott Key Mall.
BAZAAR WORKSHOP
April 22, at 12:15 following the Monday Bible study in Dinah Benson's home, our first CRAFT
WORKSHOP will begin preparing crafts for the Christmas Bazaar to be held November 9, 2024. This is an
opportunity for both novice and advanced crafters to learn or practice their skills while fellowshipping with
others. Lunch will be included.
MISSIONS
Envelopes will be available in the Narthex for contributions for these special Sundays:
March 10 - One Great Hour of Sharing
April 14 - Native American Sunday
April 28 - Heritage Sunday
Currently, there are no requests for items, supplies, or gift cards from Urbana Elementary School. If
needed in the spring, a message will go out for assistance with this project. If you are keeping up with
the Frederick Rescue Mission's needs, they are asking for cereal and canned meats: chicken, tuna,
SPAM. These items are in great demand, especially during March and April.
GARDEN OF THE RESURRECTION
Wesley Chapel will once again adorn its sanctuary with lilies for Easter. Cost will be $14 (fourteen dollars)
each, the same as last year. Paid orders are due by March 17. Detailed information and an order form can
be found on the last page of this issue or in the Narthex.
ALTAR FLOWERS
February’s altar flowers were in celebration of Dad, Riley & Emma's birthdays, given by Chris Smith.
The altar flowers for the month of March are in memory of Jim and their granddaughter, Liz, given by
Barbara Coffey. The altar flowers for the month of April are in memory of Mary & John Covell, given by
Jean and Ed Rhinehart.
Altar flowers, given for the entire month are available for the months of June, July, August, and November.
The cost is $60 (sixty dollars) for both vases and will be displayed on the altar for the entire month. Please
sign up on the flower chart in the Narthex or contact Carolyn Maher, 301-662-5769.
MEALS AFTER WORSHIP
It has long been a tradition at Wesley Chapel to have a meal after worship the last Sunday of each
month, except for September, November, and December. We are asking for more people, a family or a
group of friends, to provide a light lunch after worship. Nothing elaborate, just something simple. If
you would like to provide a meal, please contact Carolyn Maher.
There will be no Meal After Worship in March, as that is Easter Sunday.
Our April meal will be provided by Barbara Coffey.
GARDEN OF THE RESURRECTION
Wesley Chapel will adorn its sanctuary on Easter morning with beautiful lilies. This is a wonderful
way to honor or memorialize your loved ones.
These lilies will be of the same high quality as in the past. Most plants have four to six blooms. After
their display on Easter morning, you may take them home to enjoy and plant in your garden. The cost
this year will be $14.00 per plant.
All paid orders must be received no later than Sunday, March 17.
Place the form below in the offering plate or send to Carolyn Maher, 323 Adam Road, Frederick, MD
21701.
